A look at recent amendments to the chemical requirements in Switzerlands Toys Ordinance. 
- (1888PressRelease) August 10, 2021 – Switzerland has published Official Collection 2021 425, amending Ordinance of the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) on the Safety of Toys (Toys Ordinance).
This update to the Toys Ordinance includes several changes, including:
Revisions to the two lists of allergenic fragrances
Strengthened aluminum migration limits for all three categories of toy materials:
o Category I (dry, brittle, powder-like or pliable): 2,250 mg/kg
o Category II (liquid or sticky): 560 mg/kg
o Category III (scraped-off): 28,130 mg/kg
Expansion to the number of regulated substances from 10 to 11 by adding formaldehyde to toys for children under 36 months or in other toys intended to be placed in the mouth (see original SafeGuard 105/21 to learn more)
Replaces SN EN 71-3: 2013 with corrigendum A3: 2018 with SN EN 71-3: 2019 for the migration of certain elementsSwitzerlands Toys Ordinance contains elements of the European Unions Directive 2009/48/EC, so-called Toy Safety Directive, and Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).
These amendments became effective on August 1, 2021. Stakeholders should be aware that toys, which do not comply with these provisions, can be manufactured and imported under the previous law until July 31, 2022, and may continue to be sold to consumers until stocks are exhausted.
