Executive Interview with Jordan McQuown, vice president of technology at George Jon

To begin, can you share some background on George Jon – maybe a few things we wouldn’t be able to find online?

JM: George Jon  is an eDiscovery platform, product, and process specialist delivering performant, scalable, and fault-tolerant environments. We work with global corporations, leading law firms, government agencies, and independent reseller and hosting companies. We specialize in helping our clients and partners quickly and strategically implement large-scale eDiscovery platforms, troubleshoot and perfect existing systems, and provide unprecedented 24/7 core services to ensure maximum platform performance and uptime.

At George Jon, we employ a modular framework that has been tested and perfected over almost a decade and a half. Our framework consists of R&D, environments that can be customized (i.e., scaled) to individual client needs, budgets, and regulatory requirements. We’ve managed projects for all of the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms and members of the Am Law 100.

Our best practices have become the standard for global eDiscovery systems, driving productivity, profits, and peace of mind throughout the industry.

You recently had a project of roughly 500 terabytes that needed to be completed on a six-month timeline. How did you go about tackling such a large project?

JM: We knew we were going to need reliable partners to ensure we stayed on time and on budget while maintaining our high standards of service. We needed data migration software that could provide our clients with fast and reliable file transfer capabilities. The solution needed to contain a chain of custody capability to provide precision tracking of each object being migrated and give us complete confidence in its integrity when it arrived at its destination—and we were not interested in second best.

Can you tell us about the solution for the project? How did you choose Datadobi?

JM: Datadobi became known to us through a Dell referral. Their migration software, DobiMigrate, simply outperformed the other options in all areas: speed, scalability, reporting—and offered unmatched data integrity safeguards.

The speed of other providers could not match DobiMigrate. Scalability wasn’t acceptable in other tools either, particularly when the timeframe for a cutover was narrowed down to a weekend or even a couple of hours—the optimal time for many clients. Reporting, when contrasted with DobiMigrate monitoring and support offerings, also lacked considerably in other solutions. With the complexity of the data sets with which we work, DobiMigrate made it easier than other tools to manage various components and it offered insights into when the migration would be completed.

Finally, DobiMigrate was capable of the speed we were looking for and comes equipped with the all-important chain of custody functionality that compares a hash taken at the beginning of a migration to a second one taken at the end.

What were the deciding factors that persuaded you to work with Datadobi?

JM: We were initially skeptical of the benchmarks Datadobi agreed to, so we supplied them with a test data set. Datadobi met its promised benchmark—a metric which was roughly 10x faster than other options.

From a transfer perspective, DobiMigrate performed faster than any other method we had tried. From a relationship standpoint, Datadobi has proven to be uncomplicated and has required little time to set up. Day to day, DobiMigrate reporting enables better attention management for engineers and project managers by providing project managers valuable insight into projects without having to interrupt the workflow of engineers to pull reports.

How has your relationship with Datadobi evolved throughout your time working with them?

JM: Ultimately, Datadobi is the only vendor on the market that brings the kind of speed we need when you’re dealing with data sets of millions and millions of tiny files. We have been working very effectively with their team to provide our clients with excellent service and look forward to building on the success of projects already completed into a long-term relationship.
